The only event on the western side of the Cape York Peninsula! The Back Beach of Mapoon is an exposed 12km stretch of beach north of the mining town Weipa where we work together with the Mapoon Land & Sea Rangers.
Due to its location on the Gulf of Carpentaria where most of the lost fishing gear of the Timor Sea gets trapped in the whirling current this is the beach where giant ghost nets are frequently pulled out of the sand and where more thongs are found than anywhere else in the country.
Rubbish from this remote beach will be collected and sorted over the five days. Accommodation is at a basic bush camping area where the kitchen will be set up to prepare meals together. Kitchen equipment will be provided, but you will need to bring your own sleeping gear.
Travel is arranged from Cairns and Port Douglas over two days to the event and back. Seats are limited so register early to secure your spot!
