Kowanyama Aboriginal Shire Council
The Kowanyama Aboriginal Shire Council community is situated 25 km (as the crow flies) from the west coast of the Gulf of Carpentaria in the south-western region of Cape York Peninsula, 600 kilometres north-west of Cairns. The community resides on the bank of Magnificent Creek, which joins the South Mitchell River, and forms part of the Mitchell River Delta system.
Kowanyama has more than 100 residents, making it one of the largest communities on Cape York. Kowanyama's Aboriginal people continue to identify strongly with their ancestral countries and with the languages, stories, songs, dances, and histories associated with these lands.
Language groups associated with countries in the Kowanyama region are Yir Yoront, Yirrk Thangalkl, Koko Bera, Uw Oykangand, and Olkola.
The Council funds the Kowanyama Aboriginal Land and Natural Resources Management Office, through their enterprise income.
