Alice River runs through Kimba Station very close to the northern boundary. Cattle have open access to a section of river from the old fence. This causes erosion of bed and banks, spreading of weeds, fouling of waterholes and higher grazing pressure in the riparian area adjacent to the river.
This project will fence 10 kms of the southern bank of the Alice River thus creating a fenced corridor along the river where grazing can be controlled. One dam inside the fence will be needed to supply water to the cattle when excluded from the river.

Of particular concern is the Freshwater Tiger Crab, Austrothelphusa tigrina, endemic to one tributary of the Alice River, that form sealed holes in the sandy bank to last out the dry season. As such they are very susceptible to trampling by cattle during this time. The section of the Jeremy Dodd’s Creek will be assessed for aquatic biodiversity prior to the on ground works, to provide a baseline assessment. The proposed fence will exclude cattle from much of this area and the site will be again assessed once the fence has been installed and impact from cattle reduced.

Photo point monitoring sites will be set up along the fence to monitor vegetation condition.
