Community Action Plan 2023 Review

The 2023 review of the Community Action Plan (CAP) project was released this month, with new findings showing fishing and harvesting, garbage and solid waste and mining were the top three concerns of south Cape York community members surveyed.

The Project, delivered by Cape York NRM and South Cape York Catchments, was designed to enable local action to benefit the Great Barrier Reef and local environment.

Through a series of community workshops with Traditional Owners, youth and community members from October 2020 to January 2021, together with a review of existing plans,13 priority strategies were developed that fell into four themes:

• Reducing visitor impacts and restoring country

• Engaging youth to care for the Reef, coasts and catchments

• Restoring customary care of turtle and dugong populations

• Strengthening heritage protections and management practices.

Of the 13 suggested CAP strategies, seven have been funded for implementation and four have already commenced action.

You can read the review in full in the attachment below.

Development of this Community Action Plan was funded by the partnership between the Australian Government’s Reef Trust and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation.
