Annual General Meeting and Annual Report

The Annual General Meeting for Cape York NRM was held this month at Coen, where three new board members were announced:

Pip Schroor - Pip is currently the Regional Resilience Coordinator for Torres Cape Indigenous Council Alliance (TCICA) and brings to the Board a long history of engagement and partnership development with First Nations people in Cape York Peninsula.

Jim Turnour - Jim is currently the General Manager for Wuthathi Aboriginal Corporation. Prior to this role he was with Jabalbina Yalanji Aboriginal Corporation and a Director with Yalanji Joint Venture Aboriginal Corporation.

Clifford Harrigan - Cliff is currently Balnggarrawarra Ranger with South Cape York Catchment. He lives at Normanby Station and is a Director of Normanby Aboriginal Corporation. He has previously been the Mayor for Wujal Wujal Shire Council and a Director of Jabalbina Aboriginal Corporation. If you haven't met Cliff, you may well have seen him with his brothers touring the country with his Black Image Band.

Also re-elected were Cooktown Counsellor Marilyn Morris and Hurriyet Babacan who is Vice Chair. They join Sally Gray, who is Chair, and Sally Witherspoon.

We have also released our Annual Report that reviews the many successes of the 2021-22 financial year as the organisation came out of lock-downs and back out in the field.

Some of the highlights included the amazing discovery of cassowries during a survey of Gudang Yadhaykenu Country in the Northern Cape Area, an all-female indigenous training workshop for certification in heavy machinery, the Smart Farms Soil Solutions project which has set up four demonstration sites in the Endeavour Valley, and many more.
