Land condition surveys underway

Cape York NRM staff are undertaking land condition surveys across the Cape, as part of a long-term program to monitor the health and resilience of the region’s landscapes.

Running from May through to September, the surveys play an important role in tracking changes over time, particularly on grazing country. This year, more than 130 legacy monitoring sites are being revisited.

In preparation, staff participated in refresher training in Cooktown for the Land Condition Assessment Tool (LCAT), delivered by Robert Hassett from the Queensland Department of Primary Industries, alongside colleagues from Gulf Savannah NRM.

LCAT surveys are quick, observational assessments conducted within a 100 m² plot, recording key indicators such as grass species composition, erosion, fire impacts, and the presence of pest species. The information collected helps inform land management decisions.
