Protecting the Eastern Forests of Far North Queensland

The Eastern Forests of Far North Queensland stretch along the coast from Townsville to Cape Melville and include the globally significant Wet Tropics World Heritage Area.
These landscapes support some of Australia’s most diverse rainforests, coastal vine thickets, savanna woodlands and wetlands. They are also one of 20 priority places identified in the Australian Government’s Threatened Species Action Plan 2022–2032.
Cape York NRM is leading a project to improve the condition of the Eastern Forests through targeted, practical management guided by science and First Nations knowledge. The aim is to restore ecosystem health and strengthen long-term protection of these forests.
To support this work, a new Cape York NRM booklet — Caring for Our Coastal and Rainforest Heritage: Protecting the Eastern Forests of Far North Queensland — explores why these forests matter, key species and threats, and the management actions underway in partnership with Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, Traditional Owners and other landholders. It also outlines simple ways people can help protect these landscapes.
